20 minutes to the best beaches in Lisbon

Lisbon has wonderful beaches that are easily reachable within 20 minutes. Come and see the best beaches in Lisbon, find out how you can visit them and what their features are.

The capital of Portugal, Lisbon, is a very rich city in terms of built and natural heritage. Among the natural heritage of the Greater Lisbon region, there are magnificent beaches that create truly idyllic scenery and are ideal for enjoying days of tranquility, relaxation and well-being in harmony with the clear sands and the Atlantic Ocean.

Most of Lisbon's beaches are within a 20-minute drive and, despite their proximity, they present a very different setting from the cosmopolitan metropolis we know.

Far from the hustle and bustle, in a much more open and sunny setting, are some of the treasures of Portuguese golden sand. It is, therefore, worth knowing the best beaches in Lisbon, so you can find out which are the best local destinations to enjoy the summer pleasures.

1. Fonte da Telha Beach

Fonte da Telha Beach is located in the south of the river Tagus, located in the region of Almada and Sesimbra, Pinhal do Rei.

This beach boasts a fantastic setting between Cabo Espichel and Cabo Raso, both of which are visible from its large expanse of clear sand.

The beach has still retained much of its tradition, integrating the fishing region of Charneca da Caparica. Here you can enjoy recreational fishing or venture out to learn water sports activities at the boating schools or diving centre.

It has a restaurant and bars where you can enjoy magnificent terraces.

2. Sereia Beach

Sereia Beach is one of the best beaches in the Caparica region. In addition to being a fabulous place to lay the towel on and soak up the sun, this beach is often a venue for festivals.

With a popular restaurant and nightclub, this beach hosts various electronic music festivals and sunsets and allows visitors to enjoy sun lounges, beds, sofas and chairs on white sand.

It is still a popular destination for water sports and regularly frequented by surfers.

3. Meco Beach

Located near Aldeia do Meco, this beach is well-known for its ideal surfing conditions, which are also suitable for other water sports.

This is a good place to enjoy the sun and also the local restaurant - Bar do Peixe - where some of the best flavours of the local cuisine are tasted, with fresh fish and shellfish being the king of the table.

This beach is also known as Praia do Moinho de Baixo, which is the most common name that appears on the signposts.

4. São Julião Beach

If instead of crossing the river Tagus, you want to enjoy other beaches in the Lisbon region, we strongly recommend you to visit the São Julião Beach, which is a beach close to Mafra, just outside Ericeira. It is extremely appreciated by nature lovers.

Here you can take part in water sports such as surfing or bodyboarding, enjoy recreational fishing or simply climb the cliffs and enjoy some of the most beautiful views in the region.

5. Adraga Beach

One of the most beautiful beaches in Sintra is undoubtedly the Adraga Beach. This beach is located in Sintra-Cascais Natural Park and has a beach of about 400 metres long, where you can fully enjoy the best of summer pleasure.

The beautiful cliffs and rocky formations create, along with the multiple seagulls, a scenery worthy of the movies. Here you will enjoy a restaurant, showering rooms and also the visitable Pedra de Alvidrar Caves.

This beach was once considered to be one of the most beautiful European beaches.

6. Guincho Beach

Guincho Beach is one of the most beautiful beaches in Portugal and, undoubtedly, one of the most beautiful in the Lisbon region.

This beach is located in Cascais and is very windy, which is ideal for kite-surfing, surfing and windsurfing, which also makes it a favourite for lovers of water sports.

It also has magnificent views and wonderful dunes that give it a wild and earthy look.

7. Formosa Beach

Close to Torres Vedras and still close to Lisbon, the Formosa Beach certainly lives up to its name and presents itself as a beautiful beach, with rock formations of unparalleled beauty and a cliff that gives it a postcard look.

Natural and beautiful, this beach forms a small bay that tends to please families by allowing the little ones to play more freely.

Due to the number of stairs that provide access to the beach, it can be challenging for the elderly or those with mobility issues.
