Daniel Martins, the Managing Partner of Engel & Völkers Vilamoura answers the following 10 questions:
1. What did you do before you became an estate agent?
My career in the Algarve, where I have been since 2007, started by practicing law. Then I realised that this was not the way to continue, so I decided to return to my roots and teach Tap dance and Pilates. There was also a time when I collaborated with a golf agency operating in the Central Algarve which later proved very useful in my real estate experience.
2. How long have you been working as an estate agent?
Since 2013 as a collaborator in another agency in the same market segment, and with E&V Vilamoura since the first day - September 2015.
3. What do you enjoy most about your job?
I generally like everything but especially working with the E&V Vilamoura team. And I particularly like the fact that every customer is different. They come to me from different parts of the world, which consequently allows me to learn new things every day. For homeowners, I like to provide a smooth and rigorous process of selling their property. On the buyers side, I especially like to offer them the possibility of enjoying this “corner of heaven” that is Vilamoura and the Algarve in general.
4. From your point of view, what does it take to be a good estate agent?
Resilience, consistency, passion for teamwork and often thinking 'out of the box' with a hint of humour at times. Of course, identifying in your daily life with the values of our brand acting with Passion and Competence to result in the exclusivity of the services we provide.
5. Have you faced any funny situations as an agent that you would like to share with us?
There are always funny situations that happen to all of us, but I prefer to emphasise on the fact that I speak well enough French to get by. French was a language that I had long forgotten but with the help of my colleagues and some very kind clients I practiced my grammar and today, I am still working on it and making an improvement!
6. What does it mean for you as an agent to be supported by a brand such as Engel & Völkers?
To build and establish a trusting relationship with our customers, even though this is a people-to-people business and so our stance is equally important. On a day-to-day basis, we have a very useful information management system and E&V Academy that allow us to continually update our skills.
7. What advice would you give people who want to become agents but aren't brave enough to take the step?
Give yourself an opportunity if you are willing to accept this daily challenge that requires confidence, persistence and resilience. Take the step by making sure that you have a team that welcomes you and that you have all the resources you need from day one.
