Situated on the Gilão River, the town invites visitors to experience a warren of cobblestone streets, traditional, white-washed houses, and dozens of churches, many with exquisite azulejos, the classic ornamental blue and white tiles so prominent in Portugal. To the south of the city are the protected waterways, mudflats, bird sanctuaries, and salt pans of the Natural Park of Ria Formosa. It is a short boat ride away from the fantastic Tavira Island, Terra Estreita Beach, Cabanas, or Barril Beach.
