Electric heatingRich in history, the Sorbonne district is located in the 5th arrondissement of Paris, on the left bank of the Seine; the oldest arrondissement in Paris, with its narrow streets and alleys. It is home to one of the most important remains of medieval Paris, the former Collège des Bernardins, founded in 1244 by the Englishman Etienne de Lexington, Abbot of Clairvaux. Two other vestiges of Roman times can still be seen in this district: the Thermes de Cluny and the Arènes de Lutèce. You can reach Notre-Dame by crossing the Petit-Pont, which links the left bank to the eastern part of the Ile de la Cité, or continue your walk towards the Saint-Paul-Le Marais and Hôtel de Ville districts. Rue Saint-Jacques will take you to the Pantheon and the Jardin du Luxembourg, but you can simply enjoy the special atmosphere of the Latin Quarter and relax at the Shakespeare and Company Café after pushing open the door of its Library or the fabulous record shops, the few art galleries or after a stroll along the Seine. Its central location gives it access to local shops and restaurants, as well as the famous Place Maubert-Mutualité market. The district is home to Paris's leading schools, universities and institutes: Henri IV, Louis Le Grand, Collège de France, Chimie ParisTech, Mines, Sorbonne, Curie, Pasteur.
