The municipality consists of two inhabited centers, Lavena and Ponte Tresa. Lavena is the oldest historical center of the municipality, probably already existing before the 10th century BC; certain information about Ponte Tresa dates back to the year 875. The name Lavena is certainly of pre-Celtic origin, and according to some local historians, "Ven" preceded by late Latin articles means "water channel". Here, in fact, the first village probably arose on terraces and high stilt houses along the entire channel (today the Strait), inhabited by Iberian-Ligurian and Celtic populations. Lavena Ponte Tresa is a municipality located along the western shore of Lake Lugano or Ceresio, with about 6 thousand inhabitants. The territory is situated at an altitude between 275 and 305 meters. From the slopes of Monte Marzio, overlooking the settlement of Lavena, some streams with a torrential character descend, such as the Mariano and the Viso; from those descending towards Ponte Tresa, the courses of the Tarca and Dovrana streams with abundant water flow all year round. The municipality has all essential services and also enjoys a good line of urban services, bus, boat connecting Switzerland, and a railway station connecting Varese-Milan and Switzerland. Lavena Ponte Tresa is 21 km from Varese and the highway access to Milan, 60 km from Malpensa International Airport, 1.5 km from the Ponte Tresa customs, 13 km from the center of Lugano, and 7 km from Lugano-Agno airport.
