Mexilhoeira da Carregação is a village located on the left bank of the Arade River and belongs to the Parish Union of Estômbar and Parchal in the municipality of Lagoa. The chapel of Santo António is located on the highest point of the village. It has an altarpiece dating from the 17th century with an image of St. Anthony. As a lookout point, from here one can see a wide horizon, from the city of Portimão to a good part of the course of the Arade River and its banks adorned by the chimneys of the old, decommissioned canneries. Given its privileged location, it was once part of the economic center of great prosperity, based on an essentially agricultural economy and came to prominence with the increase of activities related to the exploitation of salt, commercial traffic and canning industry in the Arade River. With the decadence of these activities, the village found in others, their livelihood, also serving as a dormitory of the city of Portimão. It is endowed with some infrastructure and equipment related to health, education, leisure (sports center and sailing club), aiming at the quality of life of its residents. Currently, the Union of Parishes of Estômbar and Parchal has a small business fabric linked to construction, public works, fish farming, fishing, small industry, trade and extraction of bivalves.
