Historically Alcoy has been a city with special relevance after the Industrial Revolution in Spain, especially in the textile sector, but also in the metallurgical and paper industry. The urban nucleus is located in a valley surrounded by the Sierra de Mariola, Biscoi, L'Ombria, La Serreta, Carrascal de la Font Roja, La Carrasqueta and Els Plans. The city is crossed by the Riquer, Benisaidó and Molinar rivers, tributaries of the Serpis, which is why it is sometimes named as the city of the three rivers or the city of bridges because of the many it has to overcome them. It is situated at about 615 meters above sea level in mountainous terrain. Alcoy is surrounded by various natural landscapes and mountains that reach almost 1,400 meters. The vegetation has preserved important remains of the Mediterranean native forest, mainly in the Carrascar de la Font Roja, with specimens of holm oaks, yew trees and deciduous species. In other afforestation forest masses, pine groves predominate, accounting for 85% of the forests. Modernism in Alcoy takes place within the context of a great industrial, economic and urban development. It is a mainly architectural style, although it also develops in other plastic arts (painting and sculpture) and in design and decorative arts in the city of Alcoy. Communications have always been conditioned by a rugged topography, which has forced the construction of public works. The A7 motorway, Autovía del Mediterráneo, connects the city with Alicante from the South in just 45 minutes and with Valencia from the North in less than an hour, with links to the A-3 and A-31, both towards Madrid.
