FußbodenheizungBounded by the streets of Almagro, Génova and Miguel Ángel, you will find one of the most stately neighbourhoods in Chamberí: Almagro, Almagro is an elegant neighbourhood that stands out for its stately mansions, embassies, art galleries, elegant hotels, luxury restaurants and beautiful shops. Neo-Gothic and Art Nouveau facades and majestic portals give shelter to one of the most desirable areas of Madrid. It is also known for housing the former home of painter Joaquín Sorolla, which has been transformed into a museum in his honour. Andén Cero is a disused metro station that has been restored to its 1923 appearance as a transport museum. In the time of Philip IV this area bordered the orchards of the convent of the Salesian nuns. Later, palaces and aristocratic residences were built here, most of which were demolished in the 20th century. However, there are still traces of this noble past. One of the best examples is the Palacio de Zurbano, built between 1878 and 1881 by Severiano Sainz de la Lastra - author, together with Eduardo Adaro, of the Banco de España building - for the member of the Spanish Parliament and senator Count of Muguiro. Now public property, its interiors, designed like the garden by Arturo Mélida and Alinarí, can be visited on special occasions such as Architecture Week. Architecture lovers are sure to be familiar with the Norman Foster Foundation, located in the palace designed by Joaquín Saldaña in 1912 for the Duke of Plasencia in the heart of Chamberí. What first housed the Turkish Embassy and later became the headquarters of a major Spanish bank, has since 2017 been the definitive home of the Foundation, which has undergone major renovations to restore the palace to its original splendour and convert its four floors into a combination of galleries, archive, library and study and work spaces. Its courtyard is undoubtedly the icing on the cake of this gift to Madrid, as materials related to projects, places, people and objects that have inspired the work of the English architect throughout his career await in what is known as The Pavilion.
