Els Canyars is one of the most modern residential neighborhoods in Castelldefels. Located in the northern part of the municipality, between the consolidated town center and the higher areas of the city, it was developed mainly during the 2000s and 2010s, and therefore has a fairly contemporary appearance, with relatively recent buildings, wide avenues, green areas, and public spaces designed according to modern standards. The neighborhood has a distinctly family-oriented, residential character. Mid-rise apartment blocks predominate, many with shared communal areas, and there is a significant presence of families with children and middle-aged residents. Compared with areas closer to the beach, Els Canyars is usually perceived as a quieter area and less affected by seasonal tourist activity. One of the central elements of the neighborhood is Masia dels Canyars, a municipal facility that serves as a meeting point for cultural, social, and community activities. The work of the neighborhood association also stands out, having helped consolidate a distinct community identity. As for open spaces, the neighborhood has Parc dels Canyars and the nearby Parque dels Xiprers, an urban park that preserves a small grove of cypress trees and includes children’s play areas, sports spaces, and shaded areas. These green spaces contribute to the area having a high proportion of landscaped areas compared with other urban sectors. Sport also plays an important role thanks to the Camp de futbol Canyars, where the historic Unió Esportiva Castelldefels plays, and which is one of the municipality’s main sports facilities. From a mobility standpoint, Els Canyars is well connected to the center of Castelldefels, to the C-245 road, and to access routes toward Barcelona. Although it is not as close to the beach as other neighborhoods, it offers an attractive combination of residential tranquility, nearby services, and good transport links. Overall, Els Canyars can be defined as a relatively young, quiet neighborhood oriented toward family life, with a good supply of public facilities, green spaces, and services, which has gained prominence within Castelldefels as one of the most established and sought-after residential areas of recent decades. It is worth noting the imminent creation of the Gavà-Ponent Station, a planned railway infrastructure between the current stations of Gavà and Castelldefels, next to the Pla de Ponent planning area. Its aim is to serve future residents of that development, Els Joncs, and also the northern area of Castelldefels, including neighborhoods such as Els Canyars. The Ministry’s initial planning placed its entry into service around 2027, coinciding with the first phases of urbanization and housing construction in the sector. The project includes a Rodalies commuter-rail station with connections to the R2 and R2 Sud lines, as well as a park-and-ride facility (Park & Ride) to encourage the use of public transport. During 2025 and 2026, actions linked to the development of Pla de Ponent have begun, including major hydraulic works in the Canyars stream and the Calamot torrent to reduce flood risk before the area’s urban growth. In practical terms for Els Canyars, the new station could place access to the commuter train at a much more convenient distance than the current Castelldefels station, especially improving connections to Barcelona and the rest of Baix Llobregat.
