Mazcuerras (named a Town of Cantabria in 2008), nestled in the green heart of Cantabria, is also known as Luzmela. This municipality, located in the Saja-Nansa region, has 2,100 inhabitants. Two illustrious writers, Concha Espina and Josefina Aldecoa, have lived here. It is a highly sought-after area for buyers looking for privacy, nature, and a peaceful lifestyle, without sacrificing easy access to transportation. It is an ideal location for families who love the outdoors or for those who value a high-end second home near both the coast and the mountains. The area offers everyday amenities, and Santander is just a 40-minute drive away. Its airport and ferry service facilitate weekend getaways and international travel. Leisure activities abound amidst nature, beaches, and culture: the Saja-Besaya Natural Park, the largest in Cantabria, covers 24,500 hectares and boasts extensive oak and beech forests. This unique natural area is also home to a wealth of flora and fauna, including deer, roe deer, and wild boar, which is why the entire area is included within the Saja National Hunting Reserve. The beaches and promenades of Comillas are just fifteen minutes away, and excursions to the Picos de Europa National Park are approximately 55–65 minutes away. Furthermore, artistic installations can be found throughout the village, blending seamlessly with the urban landscape. These are the work of ASELART, a rural art initiative that, since 2015, has promoted artistic interventions in the villages of Mazcuerras. During the summer and throughout the year, the valley transforms into a cultural hub where many works remain permanently. The project originated with a group of residents who sought to unite art and the village, highlighting the value of rural life and its hidden corners. The community participates by providing gardens, patios and walls to "protect" the works, with the support of the City Council and the cultural institutions of the Government of Cantabria.
