Chueca is an area in the neighborhood of Justicia, in the Centro district of the Spanish city of Madrid. It lacks administrative status. It is named after the Chueca square and metro, dedicated to the composer Federico Chueca, and is bounded to the north by Fernando VI street, to the south by Gran Vía, to the east by Barquillo street, and to the west by Hortaleza and Fuencarral streets. At the end of the 20th century, it became the neighborhood of Madrid's homosexual community. In the 1980s, some of the first venues catering to the LGBT community profile in Madrid (Café Figueroa, Black & White, Sachas, or the Berkana bookstore) opened in the area, and it progressively evolved from a marginal space to the open cosmopolitan character that has led to its recognition for its internationally famous cultural appeal, without losing part of its original traditional air. The area also includes the Plaza del Rey and Plaza de Pedro Zerolo. One of Chueca's major annual tourist events is the celebration of Gay Pride, held every year at the beginning of summer.
