Arriving from Córdoba, Baena offers the typical image of a village in the countryside; the olive grove hills gradually unfold like a scenic backdrop to reveal the whitewashed hamlet, terraced at the foot of the hill. Its main parish church of Santa María, up there, Christianises the ancient Arab almedina, and its baroque bell tower is like the spiritual beacon of this town, with its Iberian roots, which vibrates at Easter with its two thousand drums. Although its municipal district has been populated since prehistoric times, the present-day Baena was born around a castle founded by the Muslims in the 8th century and which gradually grew until it reached the status of a city during the Caliphate, becoming the citadel of the Cora de Cabra, that is to say, the capital of the province. Nowadays, Baena, puts in value its rich heritage and offers the visitor the best of itself. The restored castle, the temples, the Almedina quarter and the magnificent archaeological collection of its renovated Historical and Archaeological Museum are examples of this.
