Location: Stresa, Piedmont
Stresa is undoubtedly the best-known international destination on Lake Maggiore, one of the most visited tourist spots in the whole of Piedmont. A town of lake, mountains and sky, of history and culture. Stresa is a town to be discovered in every corner and landscape, without haste. Walk through it, listen to it, admire it and breathe it in. Choosing Stresa means loving details. Learn to discover it by following its streets and walking up to the heights to admire it from above as well. A visit to the splendid Borromean Islands, which rise right in front of Stresa, will lead you to enchanted, fairy-tale places, to buildings and gardens emerging from the water, surrounded by mountains. Isola Bella, with its gardens and Baroque charm; Isola Madre with its lush vegetation; and Isola dei Pescatori, inhabited all year round, the smallest and full of small hotels and traditional restaurants. Not to be missed is the magnificent Villa Pallavicino, the splendid 19th-century villa that descends from the hill down to the lake and was turned into a zoological garden in 1956; you will be transported to another era and another world, made of storybook animals and incredible flowers. Stresa also offers a wonderful lakeside promenade and a lovely historic center enlivened by charming bars, pastry shops (have you ever tasted the Margheritine di Stresa?) and traditional restaurants. But Stresa also means appreciating art, cinema and music, which here find their best expression in an international festival that draws tourists from all over the world in summer. For nature lovers, moreover, Stresa and the mountains around it offer varied, beautiful terrain for every kind of activity and sport, whether on land, on water or in the air. The municipality of Stresa includes some hilly and mountainous areas: first of all Mottarone, a mountain about 1,500 m above sea level that in winter becomes a ski resort and in summer offers fine trekking walks, interesting mountain-bike trails, and also adrenaline thrills with Alpyland, a two-seat alpine coaster perched over the Borromeo Gulf. The eastern slope, instead, is home to the Alpinia botanical garden, where there are many plant species typical of the alpine and subalpine zones. The variety of places, scents and colors, and the exceptionally mild climate are what make this corner of Lake Maggiore so special. A rare and precious richness to immerse yourself in, to return home filled with beauty and magic.
