Situated on the western shore of Lake Maggiore, in its sunniest area, Belgirate is a renowned tourist and holiday resort, located just 2 km from Stresa. Stresa is undoubtedly one of the best-known towns on Lake Maggiore and one of the most visited tourist destinations in the entire Piedmont region. Boats depart from here for visits to the beautiful Borromean Islands: it is impossible not to fall in love with their sumptuous palaces, rich in art and history, and their beautifully maintained gardens. But Stresa is not only about the islands; it also offers a charming historic centre with delightful bars, pastry shops (have you ever tasted Stresa’s Margheritine biscuits?) and traditional restaurants. The municipality of Stresa also includes hilly and mountainous areas, foremost among them Mottarone, a mountain approximately 1,500 metres high that becomes a ski resort in winter and offers lovely trekking routes in summer, as well as adrenaline-filled thrills at Alpyland, a roller coaster with two-seat cars perched above the Borromean Gulf. The eastern slope is home to the Alpinia Botanical Garden, where many plant species typical of the alpine and subalpine zones can be found.
