Pozuelo de Alarcón is a Spanish city and municipality in the Community of Madrid, located west of the capital’s metropolitan area. It covers 43.2 km² and, with 84,989 inhabitants in 2016, is the thirteenth-largest municipality in the Madrid region by population. Situated in an area of gentle slopes, with extensive natural spaces supplied by numerous streams whose wells gave the municipality its name, the origins of modern-day Pozuelo de Alarcón date back to the Reconquista. From then until the mid-19th century, it primarily supplied Madrid with all kinds of goods, particularly agricultural and livestock products and those from the tanning industry. Except for the interruption caused by the Spanish Civil War, during which its inhabitants were evacuated and the area was severely devastated, over the past century and a half Pozuelo de Alarcón has welcomed a steady flow of holidaymakers and affluent residents seeking peace and proximity to the capital. Since the 1960s, economic growth and improved transport links have attracted people from all social backgrounds, including young residents, transforming Pozuelo into a significant and dynamic city within its region and eventually making it the municipality with the highest per-capita income in the country.
