Description
E&V sells a duplex in a fully restored palace on Rúa Nova in Santiago de Compostela. The property has 232 m² built area and has undergone a complete renovation, turning it into an exclusive home in the historic old town. The building, full of character and memory, is called Pazo Pedrosa, known by locals as the Hotel España, where traditional architecture coexists with modern comfort thanks to the installation of an elevator.
Before crossing the main door of the home, an imposing stained-glass ceiling draws our attention, like a skylight, bringing natural light to the entire staircase. We enter the home and find an entrance hall with the main door, another door to the service area, and stairs to the upper floor. We access a large living room that immediately becomes the centerpiece of the house, and the other hall allows us to reach the upper level. From its windows, the view inevitably turns to one of the city’s most recognizable landmarks: the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela, whose presence accompanies everyday life and turns every moment into a unique experience. The entrance floor is completed by a separate, very practical kitchen, two bathrooms, and two bedrooms that add spaciousness and versatility to the whole. The floors are oak wood planks and the doors are oak. The upper floor has been conceived as an independent, functional space, divided into two loft-style apartments. Each has a double bedroom, a full bathroom, and a large open-plan kitchen, offering multiple possibilities: hosting guests in complete privacy, creating workspaces, or developing a residential project with autonomy within the home itself.
As a finishing touch, the duplex has a terrace, a secluded corner above the rooftops of Santiago de Compostela. A hard-to-find property: spaciousness, open views of the Cathedral, independent spaces, and the privilege of living in Santiago from one of its most special locations. With the option of a parking space.
The house is full of history. In 1755, the Cathedral Chapter of Santiago de Compostela commissioned Lucas Antonio Ferro Caaveiro to draw up the plans for the new façade of the Azabachería, replacing the medieval portal; he was also commissioned to design this house, consisting of a ground floor with arcades, a first floor with elongated balconies and a central projecting balcony, and a second floor with three balconies and coats of arms. The building is crowned by an important projecting cornice, at whose ends there are polygonal gargoyles. Hotel España was one of the most sought-after in the city. The heraldic shields adorning the façade are ecclesiastical. Unlike many rural Galician pazos, this is an urban pazo; it was called Pazo Pedrosa: a manor residence integrated into the fabric of the historic city. Rúa Nova was an important street within the medieval enclosure and concentrated the homes of well-to-do families and institutions. The architecture preserves very characteristic features of Compostela Baroque: ashlar stone construction, a ground floor with arcades, designed to protect from the weather and encourage urban activity. It is important to note that the staircase is preserved: it begins with a stone flight and a powerful stone pillar. The heraldic shields do not appear to be simple arms of a single lineage, but rather a more elaborate set, possibly intended to represent family alliances or institutional dignity (something relatively common in buildings linked to urban elites and the environment of the Chapter in Santiago).
