Location: Barbate, Andalusia

Barbate is located in the area referred to by the Greeks as the Pillars of Hercules. This white and radiant town has always been connected to the sea and fishing, sprawling around its picturesque fishing harbor. With numerous prehistoric traces in the Sierra del Retín (featuring remnants of schematic paintings, anthropomorphic tombs, and the dolmens of Caño Arado), it was the Phoenicians who turned Barbate into an export port by introducing the almadraba system, which continues to this day. Under the Roman Empire, the town experienced its heyday and became a prosperous location due to the fishing and salt industries. From the Visigothic period comes the hermitage of San Ambrosio, situated in the middle of the natural park. Similarly, the Palomar de la Breña, an 18th-century estate, has been converted into a hotel operation and houses one of the three largest dovecotes in Europe (with 7,700 nesting places). Notable are the religious sculpture art and the veneration of the Virgin del Carmen. The beaches are paradisiacal and ideal for swimming and water sports. Carmen Beach is located next to the harbor (inside the village), features a large promenade, and is a popular spot for fishing with rods, kitesurfing, or rowing.
