Location: Barbate, Andalusia

Barbate is located in the area that the Greeks called the Pillars of Hercules. This white and bright town has long been connected to the sea and fishing, arranged around its picturesque fishing port. With numerous prehistoric traces in the Sierra del Retín (with remains of schematic painting; anthropomorphic tombs and the dolmens of Caño Arado), it was the Phoenicians who made Barbate an export port by implementing the almadraba system, which has continued to this day. During the Roman Empire, the locality experienced its greatest splendor, becoming a prosperous enclave due to the fishing and salting industry. From the Visigoth period, the hermitage of San Ambrosio is preserved, situated in the heart of the natural park. Just like the Palomar de la Breña, an 18th-century estate converted into a hotel, which houses one of the three largest dovecotes in Europe (with 7,700 nesting boxes). Notable are its brotherhood imagery and the devotion to the Virgen del Carmen. The beaches are paradisiacal and ideal for swimming and water sports. Carmen Beach is located next to the port (inside the town), it has a large promenade and is commonly used for fishing with a rod, kitesurfing, or rowing.
