Location: Vilafranca de Bonany, Balearic Islands
Located in the centre of Mallorca, Vilafranca de Bonany is a municipality in Pla de Mallorca and has a population of around 3,500 inhabitants. In 1813 it separated from the municipality of Petra, becoming an independent municipality. It borders the towns of Felanitx, Sant Juan, Porreres and Manacor. Vilafranca is known for the production of melons, which are grown on its own land. In the first week of September, the fair dedicated to this fruit takes place, and it is a tradition to hold a contest for the largest melon grown. In its streets you can find the typical grocery shops with their products hanging from their facades (peppers, garlic, tomatoes). It has several supermarkets, restaurants and cafés and a sports centre. One of its most famous and well-known characters is the singer-songwriter Bartomeu Nicolau Morlá (Tomeu Penya). His work combines Mallorcan music with rock and roll and country. It is about 45 minutes from the centre of Palma and the airport, and 25 minutes from the nearest beaches.
