Rafina is located on the coast of Eastern Attica and is the second-largest port in the prefecture after Piraeus, with heavy traffic to the Cyclades. In recent years Rafina has experienced major growth and is essentially a suburb of Athens, thanks to the Attiki Odos motorway, which improved access from the city center as it connects with Marathon Avenue in nearby Pikermi. It is about 25 km from Athens.

The main road of Eastern Attica, Marathon Avenue, crosses it to the west, while Admiral Fleming Avenue starts from Marathon Avenue and, after a short distance, ends at the city center and the port. The city covers an area of 19,000 stremmas and its population amounts to 12,168 inhabitants, according to the 2011 Census, while in the summer months it reaches 30,000–50,000.

It is densely populated in the center near the port, but it also has large areas with parks and green spaces, as well as two large beaches: the first next to the port and the second, the most popular, Marikes Beach at the Avlaki location to the south. It borders Mati to the north, Artemida to the south, and to the east it is washed by the South Euboean Gulf.

Kallitechnoupoli and Neos Voutzas are the two major outlying districts of Rafina, west of Marathon Avenue, on the foothills of Mount Penteli. Many holiday homes as well as permanent residences have been built there.
