The Panagia Faneromeni is located in the northwestern part of Thessaloniki. The name of the area is derived from the district of the same name in Constantinople, as refugees from Asia Minor, Constantinople, Eastern Thrace, and Eastern Rumelia were the first inhabitants of the area after the Asia Minor Catastrophe.
