Gerakas is a municipal community and the seat of the Municipality of Pallini, in the Regional Unit of East Attica of the Region of Attica. It lies on the northeastern edge of the Athens metropolitan area and is a northern suburb of Athens. The area’s population is 30,000, its area 11 sq km, and its density 2,722 inhabitants per sq km, according to the 2011 census. Well-known neighborhoods of Gerakas are Gargittos, Stavros and Balana. It borders Agia Paraskevi, Penteli and Chalandri. It is a suburb that has seen rapid growth in recent years. With the passage of Attiki Odos and the metro, its character changed drastically, becoming an urban area of Athens while its infrastructure was modernized. In the northwestern part of the area is Koufou Hill (at the foothills of the observatory), on the border with the Penteli settlement of Agios Dimitrios. Gerakas has been developing rapidly after the establishment of the Doukissis Plakentias metro station, without losing its urban beauty. There are many parks and, in general, it is a pleasant environment for families with children.
