Plateia Agiou Nikolaou: Location and surroundings of this property

North of the center of Athens, Agios Nikolaos is a busy residential and commercial area. The central avenue of Acharnon is a busy, tree-lined avenue with a wide variety of shops and cafes. The highlights of the area are the 19th century Church of Agios Nikolaos, the Byzantine Cathedral of the Holy Trinity and the house of Lela Karagiannis, the former residence of a World War II resistance leader. Kato Patisia is defined to the north-northeast by Ano Patisia, to the east by Kypseli, to the south by Agios Nikolaos, to the southwest by Thymarakia and Sepolia, to the west by the river Kifissos and the location of Three Bridges, where the National Highway of Athens - Lamia passes through Kifissos. The church of Agios Dimitrios Oplou got its nickname because it is only here that Agios Dimitrios is depicted armed. That is why its narrow area was called Opla or Sta Opla. According to another version, during the War of 1821 a group of fighters who had camped in the temple for the night, were suddenly awakened by a voice: "To arms!". They got up and barely managed to fend off a Turkish attack. Later, when they were questioned among themselves, it was found that they were all asleep at the time the voice had been heard. So they attributed the voice to a miracle of Saint Dimitrios. A multicultural area with a simple neighbourhood character.
