Historic detached house in Plaka with large courtyard

In the heart of Plaka, very close to Syntagma Square, stands a rare 1827 detached house, possibly the oldest surviving residence in the area. It once served as the seat of the Islamic court during the Ottoman period and as the residence of the last Qadi, still retaining the sense of a different era.

The property is arranged over three independent levels, comprising three separate apartments and an “ontas” that has been converted into two independent studio units with bathrooms. The house offers a large internal courtyard, offering light and calmness in the centre of Athens. The traditional “hayiati” spaces remain part of the residence, while the rooftop provides open views toward the Athenian horizon.

This is a historic property in need of restoration, which nevertheless preserves its authenticity—more a piece of old Athens than a conventional residence.

It can remain a distinctive private home, be converted into a small high-end boutique accommodation, or be used for cultural purposes. The separate levels and independent spaces allow for flexible layouts, without losing the historic character of the building.
