Form in motion

He treats jewelry not as a static object, but as a living extension of the body. From Athens to Paris, Nikos Koulis translates technical excellence, movement, and the proportions of Greek thought into a contemporary language of high jewelry.

The art of balance
In an industry often associated with ostentation, the remarkably understated Nikos Koulis has forged a different path. Almost silently and with unwavering consistency, he gradually built an international house rooted in Athens, establishing a presence in the world's most demanding markets. His recent expansion into Paris, one of the historic capitals of high jewelry, represents the maturation of a creative journey that has evolved steadily over two decades. It is defined by a dedication to detail and a steadfast refusal to follow the easy formulas of the times, cementing his status not merely as a jeweler, but as the creator of a highly personal design language.
For Nikos Koulis, who was born into a family of jewelers and studied gemology and stone carving at the Gemological Institute of America, the relationship a piece of jewelry shares with the body is just as important as its aesthetic appeal. The way an earring rests on the ear, how a bracelet embraces the wrist, or how a necklace follows the movement of the neck are all integral parts of his creative process.
It is no coincidence that before dedicating himself entirely to jewelry, he was involved in dance. The concepts of flow and balance remain evident in his work to this day. His pieces seem to reject any sense of being static. Even in his most complex high jewelry creations, he is constantly searching for a sense of lightness.
This approach is accompanied by an almost obsessive dedication to detail. Yet, the perfection he seeks is never rigid. On the contrary, he is captivated by old diamond cuts, the open facets of stones, and the minor imperfections that tell a story. He often searches for months for a specific stone until he finds exactly the one he has envisioned.

The boldness of experimentation
His aesthetic appears to converse with architecture and industrial design. When speaking of Greece, he does not refer to familiar stereotypes. Instead, he speaks of proportions, balance, and the purity of lines. These are values that have historically permeated Greek creative thought and appear subtly throughout his own collections.
His latest collection, titled "77" after his birth year, draws inspiration from an era synonymous with freedom, individuality, and personal style. Even more intriguing, however, is his choice of materials. The catalyst was a pair of sunglasses and the way light transformed the hues of tortoiseshell acetate. This observation gave rise to a new design direction that combines plant-based acetate with gold and diamonds, creating an unexpected equilibrium between the lightness of the material, its organic character, and the rigorous standards of high jewelry.
Perhaps his new boutique in Paris represents the natural culmination of this journey. He is in constant dialogue with values that this city inherently recognizes and respects, such as technical excellence, an obsession with detail, and the belief that truly timeless design does not follow trends. It is no surprise that his Parisian footprint now extends beyond jewelry to host moNO, a new creative venture featuring collectible objects and limited-edition furniture.
"I love it when the jewelry is the protagonist, not the clothing. I find women who dare to do this to be wonderfully unconventional."
Yet, he prefers to discuss the process that precedes the final piece: the creative risks, the experimentation with new materials and techniques, the countless hours of labor, and the continuous search for new means of expression.
Ultimately, this is where the essence of his work lies, rather than in his multiple global accolades, such as the GEM Award for Jewelry Design, the industry's highest honor, which he received in 2020. Nikos Koulis does not view jewelry merely as a symbol of luxury, but as an object endowed with character, movement, and endurance. He sees his creations as small, timeless works of art. In the exact same manner, quietly yet firmly, he continues to expand the boundaries of his own creative universe, proving that high jewelry can still be a canvas for experimentation, audacity, and deeply personal expression.
