Architecture

Form follows emotion

Perfectionists and idealists, Dimitris and Konstantinos Karampatakis are at the helm of one of the most dynamic architectural firms, K-Studio. Their award-winning avant-garde design philosophy continues, twenty years later, to stand out internationally with cutting-edge projects - from Samos and Mykonos to Great Britain, Thailand, and Turkey.

They grew up in an environment constantly exposed to some form of design - their father is an architect and civil engineer. From an early age, they were fascinated by the process of construction, materials, and technical aspects of building.

Later, while studying in London, they were influenced and inspired by leading architects of the time, such as Will Alsop, Rem Koolhaas, and Peter Cook.

They always carry with them their love for materials and construction techniques, yet in every location they highlight and embrace local practices. In Thailand, they adopted tropical timber and the brick traditionally used to build temples. In Thira, they worked with aspa - volcanic ash - and black burnt rock.

They seek for each project to maintain references to the local architecture and history. The common denominator remains the idea that design should be in dialogue with its surroundings - not merely harmonized with them - and responsive to the memory and past of each place.

They abandoned the restrictive - almost apologetic - doctrine of "form follows function" in favor of "form follows emotion", investing instead in a mindset that designs spaces with the ultimate aim of telling their own story and expressing a distinct identity - one that transforms into a human experience.

Three years apart in age, they are united not only by talent and absolute trust, but also by an ongoing dialogue of contrasts. Setting aside their admiration for Kengo Kuma - with whom they collaborated last year - they are equally drawn to the philosophy of Bjarke Ingels and the works of Anish Kapoor.

Dimitris is the more optimistic of the two, often saying "just a little more", while Konstantinos focuses more intensely on the present moment and is the more introspective one. When asked the rhetorical question, "the journey or the destination", both smile and choose "the journey".

The first favors deep blue, the second black. Yet a material they both enjoy working with is stone - at times they feel they are mastering it, and at other times that it is guiding them. Neither listens to music while designing - instead, they remain immersed in silence and fully focused. After all, design is nothing more than a series of questions waiting to be answered.

They firmly believe in the doctrine that in luxury, the bond is more emotional and without limits - it is connected to how insatiable a desire can be. At the same time, they value concepts such as "locality" and "enoughness", ultimately striving for "balance".

One person’s desire should not overshadow the desire of another. It should not become excessive or vulgar, they add.

And what about the future? Looking ahead at high speed, they remain optimistic that the core values will stay the same, but they will take on a more universal dimension. Knowledge will become even more democratized, both horizontally and vertically.

Local identity and diversity will gain even greater importance.

However, our reality will certainly change due to climate change - which they hope will bring humility and deep empathy.
