Instead, Maria Deda believes that every location, every client, and every unique set of circumstances requires careful listening before proposing solutions.

In an era where daily life moves at an ever-accelerating pace, she believes that people are seeking something far deeper than just a beautiful space. They need environments that act as a counterbalance to constant tension. Spaces that foster tranquility, focus, privacy, and connection with others - when they choose it. "Perhaps, in the end, they are looking for something very simple: spaces that allow them to slow down and reconnect with what truly matters."

The emotional value of a space, according to her, is never designed merely as a visual image. It is built slowly, through daily living. From the moment a space begins to accommodate the person inhabiting it, molding to their habits without imposing itself. The spaces we love the most are not necessarily the most visually striking, but those that almost imperceptibly become a part of our lives. That is when architecture transforms into a vessel of memory and experience.

She approaches every new place she visits in the exact same way. The first thing she tries to grasp is its atmosphere. She observes how people move, where they pause spontaneously, what the natural rhythm of their daily life is. For her, architecture always begins with observation and a meaningful dialogue with the environment, never by imposing a preconceived idea upon it.

The enchantment of creation

Among the cities she considers exemplary, Milan stands out. It managed to redefine itself without severing ties to its history, investing in creativity, the adaptive reuse of existing buildings, and the creation of high-quality public spaces. Similarly, she sees immense potential in Thessaloniki - a city with a strong identity, a human scale, and a unique relationship with the sea, which can evolve by leveraging its own distinct characteristics rather than seeking ready-made models elsewhere.

Experience has also shifted how she views compromises within the creative process. She once believed they constituted a defeat. Today, she considers them an integral part of a project's evolution. "The essence is knowing what is non-negotiable." As long as the core idea is protected, necessary adjustments often lead to a more mature and substantial result. Architecture, as she describes it, is ultimately a continuous balancing act between the ideal and the attainable.

Despite years of a successful creative trajectory, she still feels thrilled with an almost childlike anticipation. Not because each project is larger than the last, but because every collaboration introduces new people, new needs, and a fresh start. Particularly moving for her remains the moment when an idea or a rough sketch gradually materializes into a physical space. "It is almost magical to watch something that existed only in your imagination become a part of someone else’s life."

Her studies in Paris fundamentally shaped this perspective. There, she realized that history and contemporary creation can not only coexist but also amplify one another. Concurrently, she remains inspired by the timelessness of Mediterranean architecture, the way light transforms a space, and the continuous dialogue between the interior and the exterior environment. She does not treat these references as templates to copy, but as a reminder that the true value of architecture lies in its subtlety and endurance.

If she were to design the ideal home exclusively for herself, the most crucial element would be its relationship with natural light and a profound sense of freedom. Open to its surroundings, evolving alongside the needs of those who inhabit it. She dreams of a home she would always look forward to returning to.
