Amenities and special features of this house

Historic building "Torre-Palacio de los Alvarado", consisting of Tower, Palace, Chapel, Courtyards and Grounds, with a total built area of approximately 1670 m2, on a plot of 1163.50 m2. The Tower of the sixteenth century, has four floors and a total built area of 413, 95 m2 and the Palace of the eighteenth century, with three floors and a total area of 1,254, 70 m2. The Palace was built in the eighteenth century, as recorded in the inscription of a window´s lintel (1784) by the Marquis of Rivaherrera, related by marriage to the Alvarado´s family. It has three floors and is attached to the tower. The access to the entrance hall is through an elegant double-arched archway. At present, after a long and laborious rehabilitation, completed at the end of 2007, the Historic Site is used as Hostel. It has 11 suites with rustic decor, restaurant with capacity for 60 diners, cafeteria-bar, meeting rooms and a terrace in the garden. . The whole is a building of general interest that is included by Decree for the Protection of Castles of Spain and has been declared of cultural interest. The initial construction of the tower dates back to the 12th century and was originally intended as a defensive building until the beginning of the 16th century, when the fighting ended, it was used as a civil residence. It was built by the Marquis of Alvarado (mayor of Medina de Pomar) and his wife, María de Velasco (daughter of the Duke of Frías and sister of the Condestable of Castilla). Its main function was not defense, but the palace and pantheon of one of the noblest families of the Merindades of Castile. The architectural style clearly manifests the likes, tight techniques and elegant proportions of the Renaissance. In its interior stands out the ground floor, occupied by a Chapel covered by an arch of crucería with an embedded Calatrava cross in the central key. The access is made through a molding arc of half a point, also presenting a large window with a screened arch, protected by grille of the sixteenth century which contains an inscription that summarizes the text of the inner tombstone, which was a present of Emperor Charles V to the Marquis of Alvarado from the pillage of Rome. There is another access from the yard and an alcove on the first floor through a window. An inscription next to the window gives us the date of the construction of the tower and the chapel: “This house and chapel burial was ordered to be built by Ivan Sainz Alvarado Bracamonte, Lord of the House of Boz and root of Alvarado, mayor of Medina de Pomar and his wife, Lady Maria de Belasco, which remain buried here. 1557 year. Pater Noster for their souls. Among its illustrious visitor’s stands out the Emperor Charles V, who spent the night when he arrived in Laredo from the Netherlands and King Ferdinand VII A bundle of skin of Pope Julius III is also kept, for which he granted the power to celebrate two religious mass a week in the Chapel. This tower is part of the catalog of protected goods. It also has an apartment with 3 double rooms, 2 bathrooms and a living-dining room with an open concept kitchen.

Barcenillas del Ribero: Location and surroundings of this property

Located in El Ribero de Montija, a town belonging to the Merindad of Montija. It is located in the north of Burgos, bordering with the province of Cantabria and 30 km from the provinces of Álava and Vizcaya. In its great extension, several geographical elements converge: the Castilian Plateau, the Ebro Valley and the Cantabrian Mountains. This makes it a transitional space; there are very different areas in terms of landscape, vegetation, economy, habitat or architecture. The Merindad de Montija is surrounded by the municipalities of Espinosa de los Monteros, Villarcayo, Medina de Pomar, Junta de Traslaloma and Valle de Mena. Located in the southern part of the Cantabrian Mountains, it is one of the northernmost municipalities of the province and borders Cantabria and Vizcaya. The municipality is full of places of great natural interest. There are signs of the Roman presence in the merindad. The municipality is one of the first and oldest Merindades de Castilla. Its historical development has always been linked to the rest of the region, having great splendor in medieval times, coinciding with the development and repopulation of Castile. Until a few years ago it was believed that between Agüera and Noceco was located the Patriniana area, restored by the parents of Abbot Vítulo and his foramontanos. In the area between Gayangos and Fresnedo, known as Peña Horrero, we can see a set of high medieval burials, in a large limestone rock and next to them the remains of a primitive settlement. This Merindad has kept throughout the history a very close link with the Villa de Espinosa de los Monteros.
