Location: Arona, Piedmont

An important tourist center, well connected to the main highways, close to Malpensa and 60 km from Milan, Arona is located on the Piedmontese shore of Lake Maggiore. A town with a rich history, Arona was long in the hands of the wealthy and powerful Borromeo family: Saint Charles Borromeo was indeed born here, in the castle, in 1538. The town boasts numerous churches and squares, among which the church of SS. Martiri, with its 15th-century frescoes of the Leonardesque school, and the Collegiate Church of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary are certainly noteworthy. However, the most important and fascinating monument in Arona is undoubtedly the Colossus of St. Charles Borromeo, which, with a height of about 35 meters, ranks as the second tallest statue that can be visited internally in the world, preceded only by the Statue of Liberty.
