Nepi is also known as the "City of Waters" for its numerous springs, fountains, and waterfalls, including the Cavaterra Waterfall; it has ancient origins: its founding is traditionally attributed to Termo Larte, who established it about 548 years before the birth of Rome. Originally inhabited by the Falisci and then under Etruscan rule, Nepi later became a Roman colony with Latin rights, mentioned by Livy with an alliance with Rome dating back to 383 BC. The historic center preserves a rich artistic heritage, with ancient churches such as the Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta (featuring an evocative 12th-century crypt), the Church of San Biagio, San Pietro Apostolo, and many others. Of great significance is the Rocca dei Borgia, an imposing fortress built in the 15th century and expanded in the 16th century by the Farnese family, surrounded by walls that are still visible and mark the city's defensive history. Numerous Renaissance palaces, including Palazzo Celsi and Palazzo Sansoni, adorn the village, along with the Aqueduct, a baroque hydraulic work completed in 1727, representing an example of great hydraulic and urban engineering.
