Cuasso al Monte, located at the foot of Mount Piambello, is among the largest municipalities in the Province of Varese. The municipal territory is separated from Lake Lugano by a thin strip of land and consists of the hamlets of Cuasso al Lago, Cuasso al Piano, Borgnana, and Cavagnano. All the settlements are characterized by buildings constructed with local stone of a distinctive pinkish color. The municipal territory is part of the main drainage basin of Lake Maggiore and of the secondary basin of Lake Lugano, also known as Ceresio. This is a branched pre-Alpine lake along the Italian-Swiss border, with an area of 48.7 km², of which about 18 km² belong to the Italian Republic. Ceresio is the Italianized form of the Latin name Ceresium, of uncertain etymology: according to some, it is to be identified in an ancient Roman toponym “Ceresium,” whose most accurate translation would be: “bluer than the sky.” Others, however, state that the name instead derives from the Celtic “keresius,” meaning “branched,” and indeed the shape of Lake Ceresio is branched, with several arms. The center of the provincial capital, Varese, and the motorway to Milan are 16 km away, while Malpensa International Airport is 55 km away. The Swiss border can be conveniently reached by traveling 8 km. After 20 km you reach the shore of Lake Maggiore.
