Baveno is located along the Piedmont shores of Lake Maggiore and is a town rich in history, traditions, and culture. From the pleasant lakeside, you can enjoy a charming view of the Borromeo Gulf with its marvelous Borromean Islands, which can be reached directly from the port of Baveno. Of Roman origin, known for its oligomineral waters and pink granite quarries, it is a renowned tourist and holiday center. The splendid villas scattered across the area bear witness to this, such as Villa Henfrey (now Villa Branca), which hosted Queen Victoria of England, and Villa Fedora, where the musician Umberto Giordano stayed. Among the architectural beauties to visit are the parish church of SS. Gervasio and Protasio and the Baptistery, located in a large churchyard accessible by walking along Monte Grappa street. The town's origins are recounted by the Roman tombstones embedded in the facade of the Parish Church, dedicated to SS. Gervaso and Protaso, situated at the center of the oldest settlement, on a plateau, preserving intact its beautiful 12th-century Romanesque facade. The monumental complex also includes the Baptistery of San Giovanni, of early Christian origin (5th century), the Romanesque bell tower, the churchyard, and the 19th-century Way of the Cross. Its enchanting hamlets are certainly worth a stroll: Romanico, Roncaro, and Loita nestled on the hill offer breathtaking views of the lake, Oltrefiume has a characteristic historic center rich in history, and Feriolo, an ancient fishing village, with its natural gulf and extensive sandy free beach, is an idyllic place. Baveno is the site of extraction of pink granite, whose particularly prized characteristics have made it in past centuries the material used for the construction of monuments of great importance in Milan, Rome, Paris, New York, Chicago, and Bangkok. Everything in Baveno refers to pink granite, the stone extracted from the mountains behind it, and the work of the stonemason: the activity of extracting and working stone has profoundly marked the characteristics and development of the area. From the street names (Cave street, Scalpellini street, Pink Granite street, etc.), to the civil and religious buildings, to the individual monuments and artifacts, every corner is marked by the presence of granite, the activity, and the characters connected to it. Baveno's pink granite is the most famous of the Lakes Granites (Maggiore, Orta, and Mergozzo). For its enhancement, Baveno works in collaboration with the Montorfano Granite Ecomuseum, and its territory is part of the Sesia-Valgrande UNESCO Geopark.
