The Upper Tiber Valley is well connected by the E45 / SS3 bis (Tiberina) highway, the backbone of the area, which runs mainly along the valley connecting Cesena to Orte, passing through the main towns of the Upper Valley such as Città di Castello and Umbertide. Essential for quick connections to central Umbria (Perugia) and Romagna, the area is also crossed by several state and provincial roads that connect it to nearby Tuscany and the Marche. The SS73, for example, connects the Sansepolcro area with Arezzo and the A1 motorway (Autosole). The area is served by several airports, offering good national and international connectivity. The Umbria International Airport “San Francesco d'Assisi” is the closest and most convenient, located a short distance away (about 15-30 minutes by car from Umbertide) and offering domestic and international flights (e.g., to London, Brussels, Barcelona, Malta, etc.). Florence Amerigo Vespucci Airport, which is about an hour and a half away by car, is an important hub with numerous European destinations; Bologna Guglielmo Marconi Airport is about two and a half hours away by car and is well connected via the E45 and A1 motorways. Finally, Rome's Fiumicino and Ciampino airports are about a 3-hour drive away. The area is rich in history, art, and small medieval gems. Among the most beautiful and significant villages and towns are Città di Castello, rich in Renaissance palaces, museums (such as the Pinacoteca Comunale and the Burri Collection) and a history that dates back to Roman times, and Montone, listed among the “Most Beautiful Villages in Italy,” which is a charming medieval village known for its fortress and the “Festa del Bosco” (Forest Festival). There is also Citerna, which preserves its intact city walls and offers a breathtaking view of the valley; Umbertide, an important center along the Tiber with its imposing fortress; and Monte Santa Maria Tiberina, a splendid medieval village in a panoramic position. Finally, there is Sansepolcro, the birthplace of Piero della Francesca, with an exceptional artistic heritage, including the famous Resurrection, and Monterchi, famous for housing Piero della Francesca's Madonna del Parto.
