Since the 6th - 7th century AD, this place was the administrative center of a vast estate, under full episcopal control, so much so that in the 12th century, by the will of Emperor Henry IV, it became a Principality of the Holy Roman Empire. Later, Emperor Frederick II also reaffirmed the validity of the bequest to the Church. The naturally elevated position compared to the surrounding area ensures, both then and now, good protection from floods and the ability to oversee the surrounding territory. Geographically, we are near the city of San Pietro in Casale, well connected by rail to both Bologna and Ferrara, and beyond, also to Florence and Venice. Nearby is the highway tollgate. Within cycling distance, there is a vast expanse of fields, mostly cultivated with cereals, and some ancient locations distinguished by towers and old palaces, such as the "Ragione" which exercised judicial power over the small principality. A very evocative setting, also due to the presence of numerous waterways that have shaped the territory for centuries and constituted the first highways in history. Moreover, the legend lives on of secret tunnels, perhaps once used as escape routes to flee the numerous sieges.
