Peso da Régua is a city in the district of Vila Real, located next to the Douro River and considered the capital of the demarcated region in which the well-known Port Wine is produced. Régua owes its development to the Marquis of Pombal who in 1756 created the Companhia Geral das Vinhas do Alto Douro and who ordered the delimitation with granite marks (marcos de Feitoria) of the production areas of the best wines. Thus was created the first demarcated region in the world. Since then, and due to its central location, Régua has become the center of the region, a commercial warehouse from where the rabelo boats departed and arrived to transport the wine to Vila Nova de Gaia where it aged in the cellars. The landscape surrounding Régua is of enormous beauty. The Alto Douro is classified by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site. The Douro River, the vineyards on its steep banks, the view from the region's viewpoints, are beautiful landscapes that delight those who visit this region. The municipality of Régua has a rich heritage where the manor houses, the large wine producing farms and the palaces stand out. Many of these houses are open to the public and deserve a visit. Douro Cruises pass daily through the river pier of Régua with tourists who visit the region and marvel at the beautiful landscapes that the Douro River provides.
