Created on January 16, 2013, as a result of the extinction of the parish with the same name, the town of Paço de Arcos is dubbed by its inhabitants as "the most charming town in Portugal". The toponymy comes from the Palace of the Arcos, the most important building in the town, which the people called "Paço" because King D. Manuel I, the Fortunate, and his daughter D. Maria allegedly stayed at this palace several times to participate in hunts in the manor's estate and to watch the departure of the caravels heading to India.
