The Parish of Santo António is the result of the merger of three Lisbon parishes: São José, Coração de Jesus and São Mamede. The Barata Salgueiro Neighborhood, the Camões Neighborhood (inaugurated in 1880 on the three-hundredth anniversary of the poet Luís de Camões’s death), the Diário de Notícias building, the Church of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, and the “Franjinhas” Building reflect the area’s urban development dynamism.

The parish includes the renowned Avenida da Liberdade, inaugurated at the end of the 19th century; the “Passeio Público” was created in the style of the great European boulevards of the time. It is an upscale area of the city where, on both its left and right, we find large manor houses that represented the area’s wealth and distinction. Until the end of the 20th century, this area favored the establishment of major service companies, but since the early 2000s there has been an increase in the presence of major international brands and in property rehabilitation aimed at the luxury residential market.
