When Lisbon expanded in the mid-20th century, it did so to the north, moving away from the river, resulting in residential and business areas along long avenues. These became known as "the new avenues" where originally beautiful mansions were built. Some original constructions still survive. Many who visit Lisbon end up passing through here on their way to some of the city's best museums (the Calouste Gulbenkian is a must-see), and many end up staying in the area, as a large number of the capital's hotels are located here.
