Agios Stefanos is a lush suburb located northeast of Athens, between the mountains of Penteli and Parnitha and just a few kilometers from the Marathon Lake. Its history starts with the Greek-Turkish population exchange convention of 1923, when roughly one hundred families from the metropolitan area of Constantinople and from Minor Asia reached after much suffering this place. The only thing that existed here was the train station with the name Oion. The refugees have created New Bogiati or Agios Stefanos. Agios Stefanos is surrounded by pine forests and is famous to all Athenians for the pleasant and cool climate during the summer months. The population is increasing by residents of downtown Athens, who are seeking better living conditions. Moreover, contrary to its neighboring municipalities that have mainly a strict built-up character, the local market of Agios Stefanos is both convenient and attractive.
