Considered the most romantic in Italy, Lake Orta is a pre-Alpine lake located a few kilometers from Lake Maggiore and just an hour's drive from Milan and Turin. It is already a beloved destination for renowned chefs who have opened famous restaurants here and for entrepreneurs who have created resorts and accommodations of rare beauty. In the center lies the Island of San Giulio, a symbol of the region, beautiful and unique in its kind, attracting thousands of visitors each year. Among the most characteristic towns, besides Ameno and Miasino with the enchanting Villa Nigra, undoubtedly stands Orta, with the Sacred Mountain, the historic center rich in cobblestone alleys, the central square from which boats depart for the Island of San Giulio, and the panoramic walk among the sumptuous villas. On the opposite shore, we find Pella: a delightful town also reachable via a walk starting from the Lido of Gozzano. Not far away, the Sanctuary of the Madonna del Sasso is situated on a rocky spur overlooking the Lake. From here, the view spans a breathtaking panorama, made of slopes and green peaks reflecting in the water. Continuing north, we first encounter Oira, which is certainly worth a visit, and then Omegna, one of the largest towns, where the Strona stream, curiously, flows in reverse. The waters of Lake Orta are clear and suitable for swimming, and many sports are practiced: from swimming to sailing, from canoeing to diving. Surrounded by green mountains, there are many trails for walking in nature, even reaching the summit of Mount Mottarone, above Stresa. It is also not far from Val d'Ossola, a destination for those who love high mountain trips both during the fine season and in winter.
