Morcote

In 2016, the picturesque village of Morcote was voted the most beautiful village of Switzerland. The so-called "Pearl of Ceresio" stretches along the shores of Lake Lugano and offers a variety of welcoming restaurants, churches and chapels, as well as the typical arcades.

Today the former fishing village has become a popular destination with Italian flair. Simple historical architecture as well as richly decorated patrician houses with frescoes and stucco can be found here. Its characteristic buildings include the "Torre del Capitano" - a medieval tower with a pointed twin window that once completed the city walls and today houses an artistic exhibition.

Attractions in Morcote

Narrow lanes and steps lead along chapels, paintings and fountains up the slope to the pilgrimage church of Santa Maria del Sasso. The steep climb is worthwhile as the forecourt offers a priceless panoramic view over Lake Lugano as well as Porto Ceresio, which is located on the opposite side of the lake. The history of the church dates back to antiquity: ornaments and frescoes from different eras as well as a pseudo-dome and the great organ can be admired here. The ensemble also includes the octagonal chapel dedicated to St. Anthony of Padua, decorated with baroque frescoes by local artists, and the enchanted monumental cemetery, whose centuries-old tombstones and tombs are impressive.

Another attraction of Morcote is the Parco Scherrer. The large park of approximately 15.000 square meters accommodates over fifty plant species, various architectural replicas, as well as ornamental fountains, statues and sculptures. The southern vegetation with cypresses, palms and pine trees as well as the small shops in the local arcade, in which specialties and art of the area can be purchased, create holiday atmosphere. Morcote is always worth a visit: to relax by the lake, to enjoy culinary delights on one of the lake terraces or to be active in sports, for example on one of the hiking trails in the area.

Idyllic and yet easily accessible

Located on the southernmost tip of the peninsula of Monte San Salvatore, Morcote can be reached both by car (highway exit A2 - Melide) as well as with the Morcote line of the post bus or the several hourly departing ferries. The village is also often visited by boat owners who dock at one of the jetties.

Since the village is car-free in large parts, the functional new parking garage of the municipality opened in May 2016 with more than 300 parking spaces, from which the centre can be easily reached via the lakeside promenade. The improved parking situation makes Morcote a more comfortable real estate location, because property owners can rent a parking space there as well.
