In addition, the 5.5 km long Mappo - Morettina car tunnel was opened in 1996, directly linking Tenero with the centre of Locarno and considerably reducing traffic. The uniqueness of the region around Lake Maggiore certainly lies in the beauty of the landscape and the mild Mediterranean climate. Locarno is probably the most climatically favoured city in Switzerland. Almost 2300 hours of sunshine a year at an average temperature of 15.5 °C allow flora and fauna to develop favourably.
