Tips for a career in real estate

Are you looking for a new professional challenge and are interested in joining the booming real estate sector? At Engel & Völkers, we welcome all talent – whether you’re just starting your career, moving across from another industry or an experienced professional.

Do you want to join the growing real estate sector and become an estate agent? We’ve put together the information you need to best prepare for this, and the prerequisites for the role.

1) Pool your expertise

Show what you’re capable of – starting with your cover letter. It doesn’t matter which industry you’ve worked in before, as you can use your existing knowledge and apply it to the real estate sector. If you’ve previously worked in facilities management, you’ll know all about property maintenance. If you’re coming from the insurance industry, you’ll be well informed about consultancy and sales, and will also be able to give clients actuarial advice. Regardless of your career focus up to this point, find commonalities with the role of an estate agent and demonstrate them to your potential new employer.

2) Expand your network and seek dialogue with experts

If you’re new to the real estate industry, you need to gain a good understanding of it. Make an appointment with an estate agent you trust and get them to tell you all the important information. Ask them about anything that interests you and get to know the industry from someone with an insider’s perspective.

3) Self-promotion and selling

Make people notice you – whether you’re applying for an advertised position or working as an independent property agent. Be active on social media and update your online profiles.

4) Broaden your market and location knowledge

Do you already live in the region where you want to work? Perfect! That means you’re already locally connected, and in the world of real estate, having a wide network is essential for success. You’ll also only do well in your interview if you can prove you have sufficient market knowledge – especially if you’re new to the industry.

5) Social skills and emotional intelligence

Is the real estate sector just about selling property? No, not at all! It’s only if you understand your clients and know what’s important to them that you’ll be able to find them the right property and close a sale. This is what makes the job so incredibly exciting and varied.

At Engel & Völkers, we’re always looking for new talent. When our employees first start working for us, they receive training at the company’s own Engel & Völkers Academy to bring them up to date in terms of knowledge and methodology. They also have the opportunity to continue their professional development at any time with seminars, coaching and webinars.
