Becoming a real estate agent - what you should consider when choosing your profession

You would like a profession with a future? Have you always been interested in real estate or are already working in the real estate industry and want to develop your career or reorient yourself? Engel & Völkers offers you everything you need to be successful as a real estate agent right from the start - regardless of whether you are a career changer in real estate or have many years of experience in the real estate industry. At this point we offer an overview of the profession of a real estate agent and answer the most important questions:

1. Who can become a real estate agent?

The challenge as a real estate agent is that there is no clearly defined training. This makes the profession equally suitable for real estate professionals and for career changers. However, this does not mean that the job of a real estate agent works without intensive training. Important requirements to become a real estate agent are:

  • Initiative
  • Interest in the property market
  • Negotiating skills
  • Empathy
  • A feel for customer wishes

In addition, as a real estate agent you need a trade licence. This is applied for at the district office and is regulated by law in §34 of the Trade Regulation Act.

2. What is the difference between a real estate agent and a real estate salesman?

The two professions of real estate agent and real estate salesman are often confused with each other or used synonymously, as the areas of responsibility of both professions overlap. Therefore, we would like to briefly explain the difference between real estate agent and real estate salesman at this point:

What does a real estate agent do?

  • Carries out property inspections

  • Determines the value of real estate

  • Mediates between buyers and sellers of real estate

  • Acquires customers who wish to buy or sell a property
  • Without legally required training

What does a real estate salesman do?

  • Real estate agent activities

  • Manages real estate as owner and lessor

  • Ensures the maintenance of the properties

  • Serves as contact person for the residents of real estate

  • Dual, three-year training

3. What do real estate agents earn?

In the real estate agent's professional field, the wide range of earning opportunities and the many different areas are particularly striking. As a real estate agent, you are largely responsible for your own success. Unlike other professions, the salary of a real estate agent is not based on working hours and fixed salary, but on the number of completed sales. This means that there are basically no upper limits to your earnings in the real estate sector.

4. How can one become a real estate agent?

Although there is no clearly defined training to become a real estate agent, it is essential to deal intensively with the subject of real estate from the beginning and to learn essential skills. These include, for example, the correct way to deal with customers, knowledge of economic interrelationships, the real estate market or knowledge of how to determine the value of a property.

In order to teach you these real estate skills, the Engel & Völkers Academy offers you a comprehensive and proven training programme.
