Sebastian Herkner, designer of the year

An inspiring journey into the world of luxury design

Designer Sebastian Herkner, born in Germany in 1981, studied Product Design at the Offenbach University of Art and Design. During his time there, his talent for furniture design was discovered which resulted in some highly successful collaborative work. His exquisite choice of materials and colours was quickly recognised and his subsequent rise to fame was meteoric.

In less than 10 years Sebastian Herkner received more than 30 awards for innovative and original projects. He is one of the most sought-after furniture designers and each new piece he releases quickly becomes a much-admired object. The Herkner Style creates an instant buzz and is recognised for its perfect marriage of tradition with innovation. In 2019, Herkner received the ultimate recognition and was awarded Designer of the Year by Maison et Objet.

What makes Sebastian Herkner’s design so distinctive?

Herkner owes his success to his meticulous choice of materials, always using the finest materials available and finishing them to the highest standard. The look he creates is often simple but there is always beauty in this simplicity. He his always innovative and enjoys pushing products to a new, unexpected level. Herkner is also audacious and this skill shines in his pieces.

A perfect example of this audacity can be seen in his Bell Table - a well-known piece of Herkner furniture. This side table is aesthetically pleasing, but it turns tradition on its head by using fragile blown glass as the base supporting the larger, metal top. The glass is hand blown in coloured glass making use of traditional craftsmanship but Herkner fuses this with new technology to create something exciting. A successful pairing of old and new which typifies this designer's style.

The French influences of Sebastian Herkner

Sebastian Herkner has admitted that he greatly appreciates the French artistic culture and has taken some influence from French design. He appreciates the touch of elegance and creative mix of colours sometimes pushed to perfection. Observe french creators gives Herkner the desire to follow his ambitions. He is open to novel ideas at all parts of his creative process, whether that is at the design stage or the production stage.

Taking a look at his chair ‘118’ for Thonet, this is an honest piece of design that has again mixed traditional with modern. This chair was created for busy people with modern lives. The seat and back of the chair are perfectly angled for comfort, and the wood is folded and steamed into shape using modern-day techniques. His “Designer of the year” award is fully deserved for his unlimited innovation capacity in the design sector.
