A golf designed by Harry Colt on the French Riviera
Exiled on the orders of Tsar Alexander III, the Grand Duke Michael of Russia takes refuge in Cannes with his wife, Sophie de Merenberg, the Countess of Torby. We are in the 1890s. He will then focus on financing many buildings in the region. The most famous is certainly the Old Course Golf.
Located in the pine forest of Napoule, this golf is the first to be built in the Mediterranean. Michael of Russia, passionate about this game, had the idea while traveling in Scotland and he discovered the wonderful courses designed by Harry Colt, a famous architect.
It is indeed he who was asked to create a "9 holes" which later became mythical under the name of "course of the Grand-Duke". Between the Siagne river and the sea, century-old umbrella pines shade you can find an ideal playing ground. To make it accessible, the Russian exile even got the train Paris-Lyon-Mediterranean to a add a stop in Napoule.
