Kyparissia is an important city of Messinia built over millennia on the shores of the Kyparissia Gulf. It is a necessary transit hub to the Southern part of Messinia. The old part of the city - Upper Town - is built around its ancient castle, whose current form is mainly medieval. The Upper town is the same attraction as the castle, its cobbled cobblestones and its ancient stone fountains. On the wide cobbled pedestrian street, the visitor will find many shops, restaurants, cafes, shops selling local products, etc. that will satisfy all their needs. The new town is modern with its own pedestrianized historic center. It provides access to many beaches, some organized with all kinds of facilities and others isolated in their natural form. It is located near the most important attractions of the Central and Southern Peloponnese and in less than an hour by car you can reach the epicurean Apollo, Neda with its famous gorge, many picturesque villages in the area, ancient Olympia and interesting neighboring cities. Due to its location, it offers the visitor a unique view, not only of the city, but also of the entire surrounding area and the shores of the Ionian Sea. Modern scholars, based on its construction, believe that today's surviving castle is mainly Frankish construction, as such buildings appear after 1204/1205. The Castle was created over the ancient Acropolis of Kyparissi Endas and the ruins of earlier fortresses (ancient and Byzantine), since the original core of the castle pre-dates the 13th century and has incorporated ancient building material into it.
