Agrigento, a Sicilian wonder

Overlooking Sicily's Mediterranean basin, we find one of the richest lands in history and tradition: the province of Agrigento.

A splendid fusion of culture and natural beauty, it is one of the most recognizable places in Sicily, with the white cliffs of Scala dei Turchi and the coastal strip of Realmonte where the rocks abruptly change colour and shape, unparalleled for its scenic beauty. Here in this sun-kissed land lies the beautiful Valley of the Temples, a mystical encounter between nature and history that takes the visitor back to a faraway dimension.

Baroque and Renaissance art perfectly blend in Sciacca where the crystal clear sea attracts tourists from all over the world; here, looking over to Pantelleria and Tunis, popular traditions and religious festivals are a major tourist attraction.

Near the river of the same name in Contrada Verdura stands the luxurious Resort Hotel Rocca Forte Verdura, one of the most prestigious in the region and host to thousands of tourists a year, including many important names in entertainment. The crystal clear sea that frames the Verdura Resort's golf course makes it one of the most exclusive golf courses in Europe. A project is in hand to construct a series of exclusive villas around this prestigious resort.

And how could we not make an important mention of a small town in Agrigento, Licata, which inspired the writer Camilleri's creation of Inspector Montalbano's Vigata? It attracts many tourists to its beautiful sandy shores and pebble beaches, alternating with steep cliffs, that make it one of the most beautiful stretches of the entire southern coast of Sicily. The port has considerable economic importance. Commercial activity has flourished here thanks to local concerns that use the port to import and export their products. Licata, currently almost completely undeveloped, is the subject of a series of exciting real estate development projects such as the future construction of exclusive resorts and villas. An already-completed project is that of the tourist port of Marina di Cala del Sole, which attracts boaters from all over the world with its offer of high-level services. It forms a veritable city within the port where one can find cafés, bookshops, elegant boutiques and even a large shopping centre; for relaxation there are landscaped areas as well as cycling and pedestrian zones, and in the evening one can return to the delightful residential villages where exclusive homes can be bought or rented, all just a few metres from the historical baroque centre of Licata.
