Tourist attractions of Umbria: the Castle of Montecolognola

One of the most remarkable attractions that Umbria offers is certainly the Castle of Montecolognola which stands on a dominant hill in the municipality of Magione, where every year it captures many tourists for its historical importance and for its extraordinary view of Lake Trasimeno.

History and curiosities

The castle was inhabited since Roman times, the first houses and an oratory were built in the second decade of the thirteenth century, when the inhabitants of the underlying Pian di Carpine (today Magione), rebelled against the Knights Templar who had control of a part of the territory around the lake.
The Castle, in limestone with terracotta inserts, architecturally structured in an ellipsoidal plan with a rectangular urban layout, with houses and streets distributed parallel to the main axis. The five perimeter bastions and the two gates, one to the north, called Porta Nuova or Porta Fiorentina, are of great grandeur and beauty, and the main entrance facing south, powerfully equipped and with traces of a drawbridge.

Artistic value

Inside the village there is the parish church of Santa Maria Annunziata, built in the 14th century, which preserves the fresco of the Annunciation to Maria and Adoration of the Magi of the Umbrian school from the first quarter of the 16th century, as well as a Futurist landscape (tempera on plaster ) by Gerardo Dottori created in 1949 in the chapel of Santa Lucia.
Some sources report that writings belonging to the Etruscans have been found in the castle, thus dating the possible birth of the castle around 300 B.C.
Over the years the castle underwent many changes and was used in different ways: as a market until it became an area inhabited by citizens so that in 1861 it had 124 inhabitants.
