Ne is a scattered Italian municipality of 2,114 inhabitants in the metropolitan city of Genoa in Liguria. The municipal seat is located in the hamlet of Conscenti. It holds the record for the shortest Italian commune name.
Mentioned, as Nei, in a document from the mid 1100s, it probably derives its place name from the Latin personal name NEVIUS. A settlement of ancient origin, as early as the 8th century it was endowed with several castles, placed to defend the village and the entire Graveglia valley from Saracen invasions, which lasted until the 10th century. After belonging to the Fieschi family, lords of Lavagna, in the 13th century it came under the rule of the maritime republic of Genoa, whose fortunes it shared, being included first in the podesteria and then in the captaincy of Chiavari.
